Collages

First I paint a thin wash of acrylic paint on white paper. Next I distress the paper by making random marks with a pencil or other mark maker and by gouging into the surface with various tools. I use colorful soft pastels to go over the marks so that the underlying colors and distress marks show up, creating a multilayered surface.  When all is dry, I tear the paper into strips, enjoying the white edges of the paper that become part of the rhythm and texture of the finished piece.

The pieces have rhythm and texture and many layers of color.  I like the viscerality of the finished collages. They remind me of mosaics and music.
